Certification Standard – Provision of Patient Care Requirements for Maintenance of Certification

July 27, 2018

The attached memo, Certification Standard – Provision of Patient Care Requirements for Maintenance of Certification, is being provided to all paramedics in Ontario by their respective Base Hospitals regarding maintenance of certification.

What does that mean for you as a paramedic certified under Sunnybrook?

In 2017 Sunnybrook tracked the provision of patient care (10 patients) and identified each paramedic who did not meet the minimum criteria. This information was shared with the respective paramedic service.

In 2018 Sunnybrook will continue with this approach. Your service may communicate with you that you are at risk of not meeting the minimum criteria as Sunnybrook is running reports every 3 months.

We ask that each certified paramedic attempt to attend the minimum 10 calls. No further steps will be taken for 2018.

We recognize that if you do not meet the minimum provision of patient care criteria or have limited opportunity to apply your clinical skills, you may benefit from additional voluntary education. Sunnybrook Regional Base Hospital has the following available to support these voluntary activities:

1. Within the Paramedic Portal of Ontario, under the education section, you will find a dashboard called “Resources”. This section contains service specific information as well as “General Prehospital Education” covering materials on a variety of topics.

2. Within the Paramedic Portal of Ontario, under the education section, you will find a dashboard called “My Courses”. Courses “SRBH 2018 Elective Resuscitation Skills 1 and 2” have been designed for paramedics who have a limited amount of patient contact. These courses review skills required for resuscitation management, including skills related to crisis resource management: decision making, verbal communication and task management. The faculty will provide tips and tricks for successful resuscitation management. Note, these courses are primarily intended for ACPs. PCPs will benefit and may register for any open spots 2 weeks prior to the scheduled course date.
