Welcome

Who We Are

Sunnybrook Centre for Prehospital Medicine

The Centre’s roots and affiliation is with the Trauma, Emergency and Critical Care Program at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and its evolving role in prehospital medicine, medical research, public health and medical response to disaster situations. For more than 25 years, Sunnybrook has been an internationally recognized leader in providing education and conducting research to improve the field of prehospital medicine.

The Sunnybrook Centre for Prehospital Medicine has a vision to be leaders in prehospital medicine and EMS care to meet the health needs of the community, and to contribute to the scientific advancement of these unique bodies of knowledge through excellence and innovation in clinical care, education and research. The Centre represents Ontario and Canada at national and international forums and helps shape treatment guidelines for cardiac and trauma care, medical care at mass gatherings and termination of resuscitation. It has been recognized for leading positive change in quality assurance processes and education delivery.

An important component of the Centre is the Emergency Medical Assistance Team (EMAT) which has been deployed to assist communities when health emergencies push communities’ resources beyond capacity.

Our name reflects our conviction that we are part of a continuum of medical care, from first responders to paramedics to disaster preparedness and integration with hospital programs. The practice, like the name, is based in science and the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. The Centre represents a strong and highly visible component of the Hospital’s brand and Sunnybrook is proud to continue to have the prehospital medicine team as an integral part of the Hospital’s family.
